Nothing Without Joy

Today we went to the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre in Reggio Emilia, Italy where we participated in a private workshop and tour about this world renowned approach to early childhood education. The first part of the tour was a presentation by the pedigogista of the International Centre. Through photographs, authentic stories, and video she provided a window into the richness that is the Reggio approach.

Following a morning of learning and inspiration, we ate at Pause, the Atelier of Taste, which was located in the Centre. This gave us a chance to pause and reflect on our experiences, to enjoy and be present with our meal, and recharge for the afternoon. It made us think more about how our day at school could be for ourselves and the children we work with. Our notebooks were overflowing...

After our senses of taste and smell were fulfilled, we met Pierre, the atelierista, at the Centre. He took us into the Atelier of Light where our senses of sight, sound, and touch were awakened in the most unique ways.

It is hard to put into words the amazing experience we shared at the Centre. Every wish we have ever had about working with children came true in a day of learning, research, engagement, inspiration, and magic. It made us realize how blessed we are to work at a place where we have the support, encouragement, and freedom to follow this path that we know in our hearts is truly BEST for children. The pages, and pages, and pages of notes we took still are not enough to bring all we learned to light, but they will be a catalyst, an invitation to us and others to become teachers as researchers, teachers as partners, teachers as innovators, teachers as wonderers and dreamers, and teachers as creators, facilitators, and magicians of JOY. Our hearts are full of excitement. Our minds are full of curiosity. Our spirits are full of wonder. All of this we will bring to the children--each one deserves a place of learning which celebrates the innate spectacular creator, innovator, and explorer inside each one of them.

Until next time...Ciao!
